Description
Approximately 2,400 Betacam SP and ¾" U-matic tapes in the AFN historical archive are deteriorating. Estimated 15–20% are already showing binder hydrolysis ('sticky shed'). Content is irreplaceable.
Justification
The archive contains 40+ years of AFN programming and historical footage. Once lost to tape degradation, the content cannot be recovered. Library of Congress digitization standards recommend immediate action for collections showing active deterioration.
Risk if Unfunded
Permanent, irreversible loss of AFN historical content. Estimated 480–600 tapes at risk of total failure within 18 months without intervention.
