- Approximately 2,400 Betacam SP and ¾" U-matic tapes in the AFN historical archive are deteriorating. Estimated 15–20% are already showing binder hydrolysis ('sticky shed'). Content is irreplaceable.
- Justification
- The archive contains 40+ years of AFN programming and historical footage. Once lost to tape degradation, the content cannot be recovered. Library of Congress digitization standards recommend immediate action for collections showing active deterioration.
- Risk if Unfunded
- Permanent, irreversible loss of AFN historical content. Estimated 480–600 tapes at risk of total failure within 18 months without intervention.
